Practical Tips

Currency & Payments

Loading EUR to TRY rate...

Türkiye uses the Turkish Lira (TRY). The exchange rate is volatile, so do check it often when paying! Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to have some cash for small purchases. ATMs are readily available throughout the city.

Dress Code & Weather

Smart casual attire is appropriate for the wedding. The ceremony will be outdoors, so consider comfortable shoes. Evenings can be cool, so bring a light jacket or shawl. August in Istanbul can be warm and sunny - bring sunscreen, a hat, and stay hydrated. The venue is partially covered, but prepare for both sun and potential evening breezes.

Language

Turkish is the official language, but English is commonly spoken in tourist areas and hotels. As a "yabancı" (foreigner) learning a few basic Turkish phrases is appreciated: "Merhaba" (Hello), "Teşekkürler" (Thank you), "Afiyet olsun" (Enjoy your meal), "Eline sağlık" (Well done/Thanks for the food), "Hoş geldiniz" (Welcome), and respond with "Hoş bulduk" (Nice to be here).

Transportation

Istanbul has an extensive public transport system including metro, tram, ferries, and buses. Consider getting an Istanbulkart for easy travel. Taxis are readily available but it may be hard to get during rush hour, ensure the meter is running and agree the destination beforehand; short distance trips may be denied due to high demand. Traffic in the city can be notorious, so do account for this. While out and about in the city, don't forget to pet the stray cats on your way!

Travel & Visa Information

Türkiye is not part of the European Union, however many EU citizens can travel visa free, but rules vary per country. Other nationalities may need to get an quick e-visa online before travel. Check your country's specific requirements well in advance. Also note that mobile data roaming may not be included in your EU mobile plan! Consider purchasing an eSIM or checking with your carrier about international data packages.

Cultural Etiquette

When visiting mosques, dress modestly and remove shoes. Most touristic mosques provide scarfs. Tipping is relatively common and appreciated. Don't forget some light bargaining while purchasing souvenirs from street vendors. At a wedding it's common for Turkish people to gift gold or cash, but for us your presence is the best gift! Turkish hospitality is warm and generous - embrace the local customs, food and traditions.

Explore Istanbul

Historic Sites

Immerse yourself in Istanbul's rich history by visiting the magnificent Hagia Sophia, the stunning Blue Mosque with its six minarets, the opulent Topkapi Palace that once housed Ottoman sultans, and the bustling Grand Bazaar where you can shop for traditional goods and experience the vibrant atmosphere of one of the world's oldest covered markets. Experience authentic Turkish culture by wandering through the aromatic Spice Bazaar.

Bosphorus Experience

Discover the beauty of the Bosporus Strait with a scenic cruise offering breath-taking views of both European and Asian shores. Climb the historic Galata Tower for panoramic city views. Stroll along one of Istanbul’s most picturesque routes: Start in the charming Bebek, with its elegant waterfront mansions and cozy cafés, then follow the scenic Bosporus coastline past Arnavutköy’s historic wooden houses and colorful streets. End your walk in Ortaköy, where you can admire the iconic Ortaköy Mosque.

Local Food

Türkiye is known for the variety of tasty dishes. On the street, try Simit - a crispy sesame crusted bread rings, Kumpir - baked potatoes filled with cheese, olives and other toppings, or Midye Dolma - stuffed mussels with spiced rice. Wash it down with traditional Turkish tea and coffee. Don't forget to read your fortune in the coffee grounds! Ayran is another traditional refreshing yoghurt drink which goes well with Kebab and other meat dishes. Speaking of Kebab, explore the different Kebab types (Testi, Adana, Urfa, Şiş) even if they are not as internationally knows as Doner Kebab! Don't forget to fill your second stomach with some dessert like Baklava, Sutlac or Kadayif.

Modern Istanbul

Explore the contemporary side of Istanbul by visiting the bustling Taksim Square, strolling down the lively Istiklal Street with its shops and cafes, discovering modern art galleries showcasing Turkish and international artists, and enjoying rooftop restaurants with stunning city views. This modern Istanbul offers a perfect contrast to the historic sites.
